Sound Painting

Sound source is attached to acrylic plate. Paint is being added on plate while it is vibrating with audio frequencies. Thus, sound is shaping patterns of actual artwork.
Proof of concept

Early tests was made with micro-vibrating resonance speakers and small subwoofer:

Concept
3 sound sources are attached to 3 transparent acrylic plates (100x100x0.2 cm each). Black light fluorescent and oil paint is being added on plate while it is vibrating with audio frequencies. Sound is generated with modular synthesizer and separated into 3 bands: bass, middle and treble. Sound sources are fed with 3 separate sound streams.

3 bands in conjunction are representing audible sound spectrum mapped to visible light spectrum. Interaction between sound vibrations and base plate with paint is responsible for the resulting artwork.
Result
Three artworks in conjunction represent audible spectrum mapped to visible spectrum. Here is the music, recorded while artworks were being made:

FREQUENCY BAND

15-200 Hz

LF Light colours: Purple/Red/Orange
MIDDLE
FREQUENCY BAND

200-5000 Hz

In this collaboration we are carrying out research on the sound visualisation. We are using sound as a medium along with acrylic and oil paint. We are developing our own interpretation of relations between sound, color and shape inspired by past works of Russian artists, synesthetes and researchers, Wassily Kandinski and Alexander Scriabin. Our goal is to reveal music and pictorial art synergy, to discover connection of sound and color.
